Awards 2008

Why wait for a specified date and all the buildup to know the winners of awards when you can know it all now,  I think I can be a credible authority with a valuable point of view on Pakistani music. I won’t be covering all the type of awards but rather select titles on which I believe are correct .Let us just  cut the introductory portion short and go ahead with them awards.

Best Album:
 Meri Kahani by Atif Aslam

Best Video:
Humsafar by Jami*

Some new (never seen before ) awards:

Best new song by an established artist:
Ujalon Mein by Mizraab**

Best new song by a new artist:
Faasley by Siege ***

Biggest Disappointment:
Tabeer by Shafqat Amanat ali ****

Best Multi Artist Collaboration:
Yeh Hum Naheen

Song Of The Year:
Garaj Baras by Ali Azmat and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Elaborations:
* This year has been marvelous when it comes to videos, be it Saqibs Aitebaar, Babars Paheliyan,Zeeshans Gallan,Bilals Hungami Halaat,The social issues depiction by Sohail Javedin Beqaraar and Abhi Abhi,Ahsan was the most prominent with 3 brilliant videos , Aag,Ek Baar and the ultra bold Laga Reh which is second if not equal to the winner Humsafar .

** the only other song which could compete with Mizraabs single was Nooris Do dil,Jals Chalte Chalte is a good effort too.

*** Now I wasn’t at all sure about this one and still am confused on which song is better Faasley or Paheliyan by Mauj.

**** Although I shouldn’t have written this album here before listening to it properly but from what I have head of the album it isn’t upto mark to what Shafqat could have done with his
album. I would go more to say that Fuzons Journey is  better.

I hope you enjoyed the award show this year and we look forward to see you next year with a more exciting show. With great albums lined up for release and with artists whom can’t go wrong ( Faakhir, Mauj, Kaavish,Ali Khan,Zameer,Call ) the albums are sure to deliver. Amen.

Coke Studio Episode 02

Maybe it was Episode 01 that took my expectations higher, or maybe it was the excellence of the
musicians in Epsiode 01 that couldn’t be matched by the perfomers in Episode 01.
The uniqueness of the first episode was that the songs were not performed in the usual way, be it
Deewana,Paheliyan or Garaj Baras and there was youthfulness all around. Rahat Fateh was excellent as well with the effortless merging of his singing with Ali Azmats. The musicians just
merged with each other ,in short, the whole episode was full of seamless performances.

Episode 02 showed Strings bringing their own musicians along and it seemed the drummer was
putting in so much effort to get his playing co-ordinate with others. The bassist and the lead guitarists were nice though.I wasn’t much impressed with the vocals other than Faisals in Duur.
Saba and Selina were good but I would have loved them doing an Urdu track in their style.

Lets see what Ali Zafar can conjure up with in the next episode and also looking forward for Sajid to do some coolness as well…

Excitingly New

2008 hopefully will be a year that (if everything goes fine) should be excellent year for new album releases.Which means
a whole set of new cd’s which will come in my possession.

Here I will list all the artist whose albums I am personally looking forward to buy as per my expectations that  these albums will be released within the year.

Atif started out the year brilliantly with his Meri Kahani release. The songs Meri Kahani, Kapkapi etc.
Ahmed Jehanzebs  album has to be the longest awaited album. I still listen to Parastish (which was his first and only release )with the same interest today as I used to ,when the album came out first.

Mizraab- Faraz Anwar goes scopier  with his new album as Maazi Haal Mustaqbil wasn’t dissolved well by the Pakistani
audience due to the fact that the music was not in- your- face melody which most Pakistanis could have related too.

Call- With their Hum Say Hai zamaana track, concerts would echo with the chorus if the audience co-operates.

Mauj- I have heard most of the tracks of their album and can easily say that they will have all good tracks in their album.
Maujs’ style of music  is  non-conventional  with the lyrics and the tunes.

Strings- The oldest ( if we look at the number of years) band of Pakistan. With sensible lyrics penned by Anwar Maqsood
and string-y sounds, the albums are worthy enough to be included in ones music collection.

Faakhir-  I call Faakhir as the melody master. He is the true prince of pop. With fresh vocals and hummable tunes his
songs are as soft as a soul of a feather.

If all these albums get released this year I can easily stretch them ( along with the older albums  which I have)  into
the year 2010.
